Waterweed, also known as peat moss, scientific name is Sphagnum Moss, which is the only extant genus of the Sphagnum moss family.
It is characterized by a yellow-white or off-white appearance, often showing various rust spots.
Growth environment and characteristics
These mosses grow in tight clumps in swamps. Their stems have no rhizoids. As the lower part begins to die, the upper part continues to grow.
The large, colorless cells in its "leaves" have a high ability to absorb water, allowing it to grow widely in swamps.
As time goes on, it remains accumulated and turned into peat, further contributing to the conversion of bogs and lakes into land.
It is worth mentioning that peat moss is the main species in acid peat bogs and has a very important contribution to carbon fixation.
Horticulture applications
After drying, sphagnum moss becomes a valuable resource in the gardening world.
It has excellent water retention and air permeability, so it is often used as a planting medium for bonsai plants and can even be used as a substitute for soil.
The aquatic plants we cultivate are all high-grade sphagnum moss from Chile, and their quality is trustworthy.
